Overview
Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer, the Managing Director of Investments takes a significant role in the strategy development and investment of NYU's endowment portfolio. This individual's primary focus will be on designing, sourcing and maintaining a best-in-class portfolio of alternative investments across hedge funds, credit (liquid and illiquid) and other absolute return-oriented investments. Extensive expertise underwriting a wide range of strategies including systematic strategies, macro, relative value and lending, among others, is critical. Key responsibilities include sourcing and carrying out rigorous diligence on existing and prospective investment managers, developing strong relationships with investment managers, and contributing to a team culture of excellence and high integrity. As a senior member of the investment office, this person is also expected to collaborate and engage across the portfolio, contributing to work on asset allocation, performance analysis and portfolio construction. The Managing Director will be a thought leader on the team, identifying key areas of risk and new investment opportunities, and monitoring market trends and economic conditions to inform strategic decisions.
A senior-level position in the Investment Office, the Managing Director serves as the subject matter expert in their assigned asset classes, collaborating with the Chief Investment Officer and colleagues to develop a high performing portfolio. The individual will also help manage, mentor, and develop a team of junior investment professionals, fostering a collaborative and high achieving working environment. The successful candidate will have a results-oriented work ethic with a mindset of continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Devise and Implement Investment Strategy Partner with the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) to develop and execute investment strategy, with a primary focus on lowly correlated hedge funds and other liquid/illiquid alternatives. Maintain deep expertise in these asset classes by cultivating strong historical knowledge and proactively learning as the investment landscape evolves.
Manage Portfolio and Investment Relationships Oversee assigned parts of the portfolio by maintaining strong, ongoing relationships with existing managers and conducting regular evaluations. Identify and recommend new investment opportunities through thorough due diligence, including analysis of strategy, process, organization, and performance. Lead internal processes for monitoring and assessing investments. Proactively recommend rebalancing, termination, or new investment actions to the CIO as needed, supported by investment memos, data analysis, and presentations for the Investment Committee. Develop and source analytical tools to support strategic recommendations.
Deliver Leadership and Team Development Lead, motivate, and inspire a team to achieve high levels of performance, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team culture. Mentor junior team members through an apprenticeship-style learning approach by actively including them in high-level discussions, research, and analysis. Recruit, train, and develop talent to strengthen team capabilities and ensure continuous improvement.
Act as a Thought Leader Serve as a key thought leader across the investment portfolio by contributing informed perspectives on asset classes and investment opportunities during team discussions and debates. Provide expertise and strategic insights to support portfolio growth and performance.
Represent the Investment Office Represent the Investment Office and the University with internal and external constituents, including University committees, general partners, and other stakeholders. Lead presentations and engagements to promote the investment strategy and outcomes effectively.
Responsibilities
Required Education: Bachelor's Degree
Preferred Education:
Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and/or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) is preferred
Required Experience: 10+ years relevant investment experience. This can include work at an endowment, corporate or public plan sponsor, family office, or asset management firm. This experience must include asset management oversight of a portfolio of managers including the selection of external investment managers. Extensive experience underwriting strategies such as statistical arbitrage, macro, fixed income relative value and alternative credit required.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Deep institutional investment management experience and a demonstrated and relevant track record of achievement. Significant knowledge of a wide range of hedge funds and lowly correlated investment strategies (e.g. systematic/statistical arbitrage, macro, multi-strategy, reinsurance) their assigned asset classes including a strong network and understanding of leading managers and their investment processes, operations, compliance protocols, and history. Advanced verbal and written communication skills including at the ability to communicate complex topics to a variety of audiences including Investment Office colleagues, Investment Committee members, University constituents, and peers. Communicates thoughts and ideas to the Investment Office team. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Must be proactive with their analyses by researching topics that may be useful for their asset class or broader portfolio. Industry Relationships. Ability to maintain relationships with senior individuals throughout the industry to keep abreast of important, sometimes intangible developments that could impact portfolio holdings. Must be able to travel to meet managers and attend conferences. Results-Oriented. Must be a high-impact player, making an immediate, positive impression in any business situation, and have the ability to develop and leverage relationships across a range of professionals. Additional critical skills include: Cultural astuteness and appreciation for the University's mission. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts, ideas, and processes with maturity and credibility. Data-oriented approach to addressing investment diligence and research. Team orientation and the ability to motivate and energize people at all levels and functions to pursue common objectives and business goals.
Qualifications
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $430,000.00 to USD $470,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
