Position Overview
Wayland Academy is seeking an experienced and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to oversee financial operations and key administrative departments, including Finance and Human Resources, Technology, Facilities, Food Service, and Risk Management. As a key member of the Leadership Team, the CFO reports to the Head of School and collaborates closely with the Board of Trustees, serving as the primary staff liaison for the Finance & Enrollment Committee and the On-Campus Resources Committee.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader with strong financial acumen, strategic vision, and the ability to manage cross-functional teams effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Finance & Human Resources
Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the Academy’s strategic plan.
Oversee all aspects of financial management, including budgeting, accounting, reporting, and auditing.
Ensure compliance with financial policies and internal controls.
Prepare and present monthly financial statements and analysis to the Board and leadership team.
Manage endowment funds, grants, and investment portfolios.
Supervise payroll, employee benefits, and personnel policies.
Lead human resources functions, including employee relations, policy development, and compliance with labor laws.
Oversee wage and benefits policies, collaborating with the Head of School.
Chair the retirement plan committee and oversee the Academy’s 401(k) investments.
Technology
Oversee the Director of Technology and ensure strategic alignment with institutional goals.
Develop and manage short-term and long-term technology plans.
Collaborate with faculty to integrate instructional technology effectively.
Conduct annual surveys to assess technology needs and improvements.
Facilities Management
Supervise the Director of Facilities and oversee the maintenance and enhancement of the physical campus.
Develop and manage short-term maintenance and long-term campus master plans.
Manage capital projects and construction initiatives.
Food Service
Supervise the independent Director of Food Services and ensure quality food programs.
Negotiate and oversee contracts with food service providers.
Coordinate meal offerings for major campus events.
Risk Management & Compliance
Oversee institutional insurance policies, including property, liability, and workers’ compensation.
Serve as the School Safety Officer, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and chairing the Emergency Operations Planning Committee.
Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies across all operational areas.
Coordinate employee training for risk management and policy compliance.
Board & Institutional Leadership
Serve as the primary liaison to the Board’s Finance & Enrollment and On-Campus Resources Committees.
Prepare financial reports, agendas, and presentations for Board meetings.
Provide strategic financial recommendations to the Head of School and Board of Trustees.
Oversee legal and contractual matters related to employment, student agreements, and institutional operations.
Act as a key administrative representative for donor relationships in coordination with the Advancement Office.
Participate in school events and engage actively in the Wayland Academy community.
Qualifications & Competencies
Proven leadership experience in financial and operational management.
Strong ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and Board members.
Exceptional organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
High-level proficiency in financial software and business management systems.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (MBA is preferred)
CPA
Minimum of 5+ years of experience in a CFO role.
Experience in non-profits or independent schools is a plus.
Strong background in budgeting, financial planning, and investment management.
Prior supervisory experience with a track record of team leadership and professional development.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, accounting software, and database management.
Experience with Blackbaud software is a plus.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
The CFO will work primarily in an office setting, with occasional outdoor responsibilities related to campus operations.
The position requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk frequently, with occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
Regular and predictable on-site attendance is essential.
