Work with the Caltech Investment Office (CIO) to develop, manage and direct the organization's investment portfolios to maintain financial integrity. Perform wide variety of moderately complex functions incl. research and quantitative analysis. Develop investment strategies, policies and procedures, and ensure compliance with state/federal regulations. Follow Institute protocol and recommend improvements to procedures/processes.
Essential Job Duties
30% ANALYTICS LEAD - Lead all data analytics efforts and related software partnerships for the Investments team. Coordinate and analyze all data being uploaded to 3rd-party investment analytics platforms and service providers (e.g., Caissa, Albourne), review these uploads as completed to ensure data integrity; reconcile any discrepancies that arise. Meet with potential software service providers; engage and implement new partnerships to improve efficiency. Maintain frequent contact with service providers and troubleshoot any issues as they arise.
25% ENDOWMENT PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT & INVESTMENT UNDERWRITING - Work on all aspects of endowment portfolio management, incl. sourcing, selection and monitoring of investment managers, performing investment research, conducting portfolio and performance analysis, and preparing materials and investment recommendations. Work w/outside investment managers to maximize the short-term and long-term positioning of assets; monitor the smooth conversion of endowment and gift monies into investment portfolios. Own due diligence process for investment recommendations. Conduct meetings, perform quantitative return and exposure analysis, and negotiate investment partnership details with new funds. Drive capital allocation decisions. Prepare detailed investment recommendations. Work with Caltech and external counsel to review fund-related documents and negotiate amendments when necessary.
10% RESPONSIBLE INVESTMENT LEAD - Work with senior leadership to develop, champion and lead Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) and Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) initiatives. Prepare presentations and whitepapers to be presented to senior leadership. Represent the CIO at forums and conferences on these topics. Monitor DEI/ESG research and news; keep track of new developments and regulatory activity and share this info. w/team. Lead conversations on diversity and sustainability w/endowment investment partners and serve as an internal POC regarding these matters.
5% MANAGE INVESTMENT PIPELINE - Manage the cumulative investment pipeline ensuring all potential investments are accurately tracked internally through Altvia platform.
10% QUARTERLY REPORTING - Prepare quarterly presentations on endowment performance and exposures for Investment Committee, Board of Trustees, and other senior leadership. Prepare in-depth quarterly asset class reviews for all asset classes in the endowment. Produce a high volume of graphics-intensive slides (up to 80 per presentation) for management and board presentations using PowerPoint.
10% EXTERNAL RELATIONS - Develop and maintain relationships w/fund managers and peer institutions as a rep. of Caltech endowment. Craft external presentations and comms. regarding the Caltech endowment on behalf of CIO.
10% - SUPERVISION & KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER: Provide technical guidance and training within areas of proficiency to other staff. Supervise, assign, review the work of 1 ENTRY-LEVEL ANALYST. (Note: Does not hire, fire, or determine personnel actions.)
Hybrid remote: May work several days per week remotely from home (within Los Angeles metro area); schedule subject to manager approval. Up to 5% domestic and international travel may be required - i.e., approx. 3 trips per year for meetings in major financial hubs.
Basic Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's or equivalent degree in economics, finance, or equivalent field; and
2 years of post-baccalaureate experience as an investment analyst or equivalent position with a U.S.-based non-profit endowment or foundation including:
o Endowment investment platforms and tools including Caissa endowment portfolio management software;
o Applying Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and/or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) criteria in investment analysis and decision-making processes;
o Analyzing large cohorts of data using Microsoft Excel PivotTables, query tools, and data warehouse tools;
o Creating high volume (40+ per presentation) of graphics-intensive slides for management and/or board presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint; and
o Communicating with senior management of both internal and external constituencies.
Must have excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
Requires Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or eligibility for regular membership in the CFA Institute.
Hiring Range
$95,950 - $129,000 per year
