Position Summary/Description:
The Kenan-Flagler Business School (School) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking to fill one position as Professor of the Practice in the Finance academic area and Executive Director (ED) of the Center for Excellence in Investment Management (Center). This position will co-lead the Center together with the Faculty Director and the Director of Student and Alumni Engagement (Director SAE) and teach undergraduate and graduate courses. The Center has a mission to support faculty, students, and alumni to ensure that the School advances its leadership position among U.S. business schools in the Investment Management arena. The Capital Markets and Investments Concentration (Concentration) within the MBA curriculum provides the pathway for students to prepare for leadership roles in this arena.
This position offers the opportunity to join a world-class business school and to engage deeply with its faculty, students, and alumni in an important project to the School and the Investment Management (IM) industry. The Center has embarked on a new phase of development, which requires new leadership and investment. The ED position is new, and the appointee will shape the position and the direction of the Center. Under the leadership of the Faculty Director, a vision statement for the Center has been prepared and endorsed by the Finance faculty and key alumni. This statement provides an initial roadmap for the Center's direction, with details to be provided by the ED. Realizing this vision will require new resources, and the ED will be working with the Center's leadership and the School's fundraising team to secure long-term funding. In this regard, strong industry ties, deep conviction about the Center, and excellent persuasive skills will be key. The Center will have to earn this essential support by delivering demonstrable value to faculty, students, and industry partners.
Principal duties include:
Educational Leadership: * Teach existing courses in the Concentration, including but not limited to the Applied Investment Management (AIM) course for first- and second-year MBA students * Participate in teaching the Fundamental Investing Practicum in partnership with key alumni to prepare students for interviews and internships while developing new co-curricular opportunities for undergraduate and MBA students to engage with potential employers and successful alumni * Oversee and strengthen the annual Alpha Challenge, a national MBA investment pitch competition, and other forms of industry engagement * Create mentorship opportunities for IM students with alumni and others successfully engaged in the IM industry, including via the Fundamental Investing Mentorship Program * In partnership with the Director SAE, participate in recruiting students into the Concentration and develop new internship and full-time employment opportunities * Help manage the Concentration in conjunction with the Faculty Director
Administrative Leadership: * Manage and direct the day-to-day activities of the Center, including budget oversight, consistent with annual operating plans * Support and participate in the work of the Center's Faculty Steering Committee and Advisory Board * In partnership with the Faculty Director and Director SAE, develop long-range plans and annual operating plans with the guidance of the Faculty Steering Committee and the Advisory Board * In partnership with the Faculty Director, Director SAE and School Advancement, secure new funding sources to support the activities of the Center * Build effective partnerships with other parts of the School Other responsibilities may be added.
Education and Experience:
A master's degree in Business or Economics is strongly preferred. We seek candidates with a track record of proven accomplishments in the Investment Management industry, including qualifications and personal characteristics such as these: * a minimum of 15 years of direct industry experience in Investment Management, including significant leadership roles * the ability to engage and motivate students, faculty, staff, alumni, industry partners, and donors * the ability to combine strategic-thinking with hands-on, day-to-day execution in a start-up organization * a collaborative, collegial, and transparent leadership style * excellent communication skills
