The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) has oversite for the business functions of the Health Sciences Center (HSC) and establishes goals and objectives in alignment with organizational business strategy and manages outcomes related to those goals, while preparing HSC for a successful future in a changing academic environment. The CAO is a member of the executive team and provides input for business and strategic planning. The CAO will work tirelessly to maintain positive, effective, and responsive relations with physicians, trainees and leaders within Michigan State University and Henry Ford Health.
The CAO will work collaboratively to advance this new academic partnership, fully leveraging the collective success and expertise of both organizations, to significantly advance academic research and to expand educational opportunities for all involved. Further, the CAO will be a champion for diversity, equity and inclusion for all endeavors related to the Health Sciences Center.
The Chief Administrative Officer will be responsible for the following:
Develop strategic plans to address key issues identified by HSC President and Board of Directors
Coordinate leadership and strategic decision making of the HSC operations with HSC leaders
Provides input to business and strategic planning. Assists executive leadership in coordinating and communicating strategic plan.
Develops goals and objectives for the HSC members toward achievement of organizational strategies
Maintain financial viability in the HSC operations through growth strategies and cost management
Oversees HSC Information Technology and Budget and Finance functions. Oversees resource allocation and sets priorities to achieve strategic outcomes.
Oversee capital planning, allocation, and business plans to produce return on investment
Manage finances including budgeting, control of salary, non-salary and capital investment expenses. Oversee the development of detailed fiscal and operational reporting.
Ensure adequate resources are made available to accomplish the goals of HSC
Develop operational plans to address key issues identified by the HSC board regarding strategic goals
Plan, develop, implement, and sustain effective systems and programs that support the operational goals of the HSC
Collaborates with colleagues across both Henry Ford Health System and Michigan State University to develop policies and procedures for the HSC.
Assumes responsibility for timely reporting to executive management and regulatory agencies.
Key qualifications include 10+ years experience as a business group leader in a large matrixed healthcare organization or academic institution. The ideal candidate has: significant experience in and a strong understanding of academic medicine, strong knowledge of academic research including grants and related funding and a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
