Job Summary:
The Managing Director reports to the Vice President and Chief Investment Officer and oversees a global portfolio of inflation-sensitive investments and develop strategies for the asset class to achieve desired risk/return objectives and to help maximize the endowmentâ™s long-term investment performance.
This position is responsible for leading portfolio investment decision-making activities that support the long-term investment objectives for the University, and the management of a team of professional staff. Works in close collaboration with team members across other asset classes and strategies in informing active asset allocation of the Total Return Investment Pool (TRIP) and other pools of capital. Serves as an expert professional in manager due diligence and on-going monitoring of the Universityâ™s investments. Considers and approves investment recommendations. Prepares and delivers verbal and written presentations to the Investment Committee.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a long-term global investment strategy and primarily responsible for management of marketable and non-marketable inflation sensitive portfolios, including real estate and real assets, within TRIP.
- Identify compelling investment opportunities, completing due diligence, negotiate terms and conditions, monitoring results and developing appropriate exit scenarios.
- Monitor and manage relationships with existing external investment managers, research broad investment trades, and evaluate and select new external managers.
- Oversee 1-3 direct reports including recruiting, retaining, training and motivating.
- Manage diversification of portfolio by asset class, partnerships, manager style, industry, vintage year, life cycle, and geography. Forecasts allocations based on investment activity and direct pace of future investing.
- Prepare and present recommendations regarding new investment opportunities and asset class updates to the Investment Office Staff, as well as presenting regularly to the Investment Committee.
- Assist in building the team's reputation for professional excellence and credibility both inside the University of Chicago and throughout the investment management community.
- Perform related responsibilities as required.
Competencies:
- A proven investor with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience working as a direct investor, or manager of managers in an institutional, family office or plan sponsor workplace.
- Experience investing globally is highly valued.
- Superior analytical skills and a proven track record of incorporating quantitative and qualitative inputs.
- Think strategically, analyze critically, and synthesize and effectively communicate complex strategies.
- A proven relationship builder with a strong network in the institutional investor community.
- Ability to be constructively challenging, skillfully diplomatic, and respectfully debate.
- Experience constructing and executing investment and asset allocation strategies across a broad portfolio managed by a team.

Education, Experience or Certifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- MBA or advanced degree in finance, economics, or related field preferred.
Experience:
- 10+ years of progressively responsible professional experience in investment management required.
- Staff management experience preferred.
Certifications:
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Office setting.
- Travel in US and internationally; 20-60% of the travel dependent on time of year, generally to attend annual meetings in the spring and fall.
