Position Summary
The Rice University Endowment is approximately $8 billion and ranks in the top 20 endowments of private research universities (by market value) in the US. The endowment is critical to the university's ability to achieve its goals. The annual distribution from the endowment funds nearly half of the university's annual operating budget. The Rice Management Company (RMC) is a division of Rice University with the goal of providing a stable source of funding for current university operations and to preserve and grow the purchasing power of the endowment to benefit future generations of students. The RMC is responsible for all endowment matters of the university including asset allocation, the selection and termination of investment managers and monitoring performance of the portfolio, and reporting to the Rice Management Company Board of Directors. The endowment primarily utilizes outside investment managers and invests globally across all asset classes.
Under direct supervision, the Legal Operations Specialist is responsible for a variety of administrative and financial matters for the legal department of the RMC. They implement plans, processes, and procedures to ensure the effective and efficient functionality of the department. This role reports to the General Counsel of the RMC.

Essential Functions
- Implements, administers and evaluates day-to-day business and administrative activities of the legal department of RMC
- Assists in monitoring and approving expenditures
- Organizes, manages and completes special projects
- Collects and analyzes data, creates reports, reviews and explains trends; formulates and evaluates alternative solutions and recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function
- Analyzes and interprets contracts
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions / Information
- Conducts scheduling and calendar management and processes incoming and outgoing correspondence, both physical and digital
- Creates and maintains highly organized digital and physical documents
- Expense coding for legal fee invoice reimbursements using file-based data import (FBDI)
- Prepares legal documentation and correspondence, including redlines on contracts, agreements for RMC and the Ion
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- One year of related experience in a law firm setting or legal department
- Superior skills in MS Office Suite, Outlook, and Adobe
- Ability to prioritize work and multitask
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions
- Relevant subject matter knowledge
Preferred Qualifications
- 2-3 years of related experience in a real estate corporate setting and/or real estate investment firm
- Previous experience interacting with outside counsel
- Fluency in corporate real estate jargon
- Paralegal certification
