The IMC seeks professionals who can contribute materially to the management of the portfolio. Independent thinking and open dialogue are actively encouraged, with team members contributing to the skills, thinking, qualitative and quantitative analysis related to the overall portfolio, including equities, real estate, energy, other real assets, private equity and a variety of public market strategies. The Managing Director, Operation's, will report to the IMC's Chief Operating Officer and will work closely with all members of the IMC in a team-oriented environment. The candidate will develop a strong working knowledge of the investment management and operational needs of the IMC in order continue improving its existing infrastructure, including operational controls, performance measurement, information technology and risk management. The candidate will help to further develop, design, implement and integrate workflow improvement and solutions to assist in the management, asset allocation and analysis of a multi-asset class portfolio. The candidate will be responsible for the visionary leadership and direction for the Operations team, manage complex problems, using communication and negotiation skills to effectively make decisions to move the organization forward. This is a hands-on role in role and the candidate will be responsible for supporting the operational infrastructure at IMC.
Monitoring and reconciling daily cash activities and coordinating security distributions and settlements related to daily investment operations.
Compiling and reviewing monthly accounting and performance information.
Understanding the key drivers of investment performance.
Monitoring changes in the portfolio's risk profile and investigating material shifts in risk.
Providing instructions to the University's custodian to ensure appropriate entries are made in accounting and performance measurement systems.
Coordinating the review of legal documents.
Verifying fee arrangements and other negotiated terms.
Reviewing reconciliations and valuations of endowment investments.
Analyzing private equity partnership statements.
Maintaining financial and transaction data in proprietary database.
Maintaining tax information and liaise with the University's tax department.
Analyzing returns both at an individual manager and overall portfolio level.
Assisting in manager due diligence reviews.
Suggesting work flow improvements utilizing various technology solutions.
Interfacing with investment managers to increase understanding of information disclosed in financial statements.
Developing and/or enhancing reporting tools to facilitate investment management and asset allocation decisions.
Evaluating changes in investment accounting standards and the related impact on financial reporting.
Manage and participate in special projects

Bachelor's degree required plus a minimum of eight years' experience in investing, asset management, or finance, or equivalent expertise in a related area such as capital markets, corporate development, research, or consulting or in an industry sector relevant to the further diversification of Columbia's portfolio, required
Master's degree desirable
CPA or CFE preferred
Operations, accounting, audit, risk management, or database development and programming experience in an investment or trading operation is preferred
Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills required to effectively communicate with a variety of audiences
Must be detail oriented and have excellent spreadsheet and analytical skills
In addition, strong critical thinking skills, a high degree of intellectual curiosity, and a desire to take on greater responsibilities and leadership are all required to be a successful member of the IMC team
Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively in a demanding environment required. Must have the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines for short, long and ad-hoc assignments
Must have a commitment to exceptional quality, have the highest ethical standards, and have the professional and personal skills to contribute at a senior level to the development of a sophisticated investment management effort and the vision to enhance and further develop IMC's portfolio
