Advertised Summary Job Description: The Investment Management Company (IMC) of Columbia University seeks to add an investment professional who can contribute significantly to the management of the portfolio. The IMC employs a collaborative generalist approach in which team members are exposed to and expected to add value to as much of the portfolio as possible. Independent thinking and open dialogue are encouraged. Team members contribute to the skills, thinking and qualitative or quantitative analysis related to one or more parts of the portfolio including equities, real estate, energy, other real assets, private equity or a variety of public market strategies. They also have an interest in and the capacity to learn about and contribute to the remainder of the portfolio over time.
The Managing Director, Investments would join IMC as a senior-level member of the investment team, working closely with the IMC's President, Executive Vice President and other senior and junior members of the investment staff in a team-oriented environment. The IMC sustains an environment in which staff members are expected to develop professionally, work collaboratively across asset classes, and assume greater responsibilities according to ability and impact.
1. Data Analytics -
-Central focus on risk management, data, and analytics in respect to asset allocation and manager selection using data analytics. -Responsible for developing, designing, building, maintaining and improving the investment tools and processes critical to Columbia's continued success.
2. Ongoing development of the portfolio ?
-With other members of the IMC staff, the Managing Director will contribute to the investment process at three levels: high-level asset allocation and risk management; analysis of particular investment strategies, sectors and geographies, and implementation of investment strategies, primarily through the evaluation of and ongoing monitoring of external managers. -Establish an approach to various parts of the portfolio through well-reasoned and articulated fundamental views and preferences regarding the viability of various strategies as well as consideration of the endowment's overall asset allocation. -Keep abreast of market conditions for various strategies in the short and (where possible) longer terms. -Develop a regular program of sourcing and meeting managers for possible inclusion in the portfolio. Manage an efficient and comprehensive process for evaluating managers and for recording due-diligence material for current and future use. -Monitor managers on an ongoing basis through dialogue, research, and review of investment reports. Develop best practices regarding the appropriate approach to monitoring managers on an individual basis and on other bases (including style, sector, correlations, etc.). -Work with the Operations team to ensure robust and appropriate performance measurement, cash movement, and information receipt with regards to each manager and the private investment portfolio in total. -Develop and exploit a solid network, including other investors and consultants.
3. Broader investment management and risk management ?
-Work with colleagues in order to contribute to the overall asset allocation and risk allocation process through fluid understanding of the broader portfolio and rigorous risk allocation analysis. -Work with colleagues in order to contribute to the development of a well-constructed investment process for ideas with regard to the entire portfolio. -Work with colleagues and with the Chief Operating Officer in particular to develop appropriate risk-management metrics and procedures for the entire portfolio.
General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. A minimum of eight years of experience in investing, asset management, or finance, or equivalent expertise in a related area such as capital markets, corporate development, research, or consulting or in an industry sector relevant to the further diversification of Columbia's portfolio, required.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: -Risk management and/or portfolio management experience across a range of strategies and asset classes, whether with an individual investment manager, or an endowment/foundation or comparable institution. -Manager selection experience. This could be within an endowment or foundation, fund-of-funds, or similar platform. -Deep understanding of financial statistics and risk management, whether through advanced degrees or professional experience. -Project management experience in working with either outside vendors or internal resources in developing and rolling out critical analytics and infrastructure. -Solid programming experience in a range of relevant languages and products.

Preferred Qualifications: MBA or an equivalent advanced degree in finance or a related quantitative discipline strongly preferred.
