Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer
St. Paul's School
July 10, 2018
Concord, New Hampshire
Full Time - Faculty
St. Paul's School, one of the nation's leading coeducational independent boarding schools is seeking an individual with exceptional financial, operational, and management capabilities to lead as the School's next Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer (CFO/COO). Reporting to the Rector (head of school), the CFO/COO provides institutional direction and leadership for the School's financial management and business affairs, endowment operations, legal affairs, human resources, physical plant, and information technology.
St. Paul's School is fortunate to be recruiting a CFO/COO from an extraordinary position of strength. With a robust endowment, an excellent faculty and staff, a talented and diverse student body, a beautiful location, and a well-maintained physical plant, the School is in a unique position to think creatively and progressively about its future. St. Paul's will need the next CFO/COO to have impact in the following areas:
The CFO/COO will have the opportunity to advocate and support the people and programs that define St. Pauls' differentiating factor in the boarding school market – the community it creates and nurtures. The fully residential nature of St. Paul's creates this sense of community, but it is an expensive model that will require creativity, collaboration, and discipline from the CFO/COO to sustain.
Given the shifting demographic trends out of the Northeast and the projected decrease in high school age populations both nationally and in traditional markets, the School needs a strategic financial plan to ensure it is able to attract and enroll the most qualified and diverse student body possible.
While there is no question that St. Paul's has done a remarkable job maintaining its physical plant ($68 million invested since 2006), there will always be a need for attention to facilities. The CFO/COO will have the opportunity to address some aging facilities and ensure that the campus physical plant continues to be an area of strength and pride.
The CFO/COO is a key participant in all institutional leadership, planning, and administration. The CFO/COO will have full involvement in strategic planning, student/resident life responsibilities inclusive of all aspects of School life and serve as CEO in the absence of the Rector. The successful candidate will oversee an operating budget of over $56 million, a capital budget of approximately $7 million for next fiscal year, and a total staff of about 125 people.
The successful candidate will have many of the following experiences, capabilities, and/or attributes:
A professional with outstanding leadership, analytical, strategic planning, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic plans;
Expertise in strategic financial planning, financial and investment management, debt financing, cash flow management, and investment strategies;
An understanding of the use of technology and systems to improve service and efficiency, reduce costs, and drive data-informed decision-making;
Strong communication capabilities, including listening, writing, speaking, and presenting in a manner that is succinct, engaging, and persuasive to audiences that are at times non-technically experienced;
Honesty, integrity, confidence, and candor;
S./B.A. degree required; advanced degree in a relevant field and a CPA is preferred.
Nominations and applications, including a detailed letter of interest, qualifications, and a current curriculum vitae, should be submitted here. The full position description can be found here.
