The Associate Consultant will be a member of the Fund Sponsor Consulting Group in Callan’s Chicago office. The Associate Consultant will be assigned to specific fund sponsor clients in a supportive role to the primary investment consultant. Whenever the primary consultant is out of the office or unavailable, the Associate Consultant, through their familiarity with the client, must be able to respond to a wide variety of client requests. This behind-the-scenes, detail oriented work is critical to the apprenticeship nature of investment consulting and paves the way to more client-facing responsibilities. Specific responsibilities include the following:
Investment Performance Evaluation
Coordinate performance report delivery with analysts in Callan’s Client Report Services group
Understand and review quarterly performance reports
Write/review client specific executive summaries on a monthly or quarterly basis including detailed analysis at the total fund, asset class, and investment manager levels
Assist in working with Callan’s Capital Markets Group, Global Manager Research, Defined Contribution, and Trust and Custody groups to conduct projects such as asset/liability studies, asset allocation studies, spending policies, defined contribution plan structures, and manager structures.
Create alternative asset mixes and graphs using Callan’s proprietary software
Write and review statements of investment policy
Write and review client and manager profiles for specific manager searches
Attend Callan’s Client Policy Review and Manager Search Committee meetings
Business Development Support
Provide assistance in responding to inquiries from prospective clients
Prepare detailed responses to Requests-for-Proposals
Write comprehensive proposals
Create customized finals presentation materials
Assist in general marketing effort
Research prospective clients
Use Callan’s proprietary programs and systems
Assist in developing customized educational programs for fund sponsor clients
Research special topics for general consultants
Contribute to Callan published research efforts
Skills and characteristics
Strong writing and editing skills
Strong analytical capabilities
Strong understanding of capital markets and investment portfolio theory
Possess excellent verbal communication skills
Work well in a team environment
Knowledge with Microsoft Windows and programs (primarily Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Knowledge of SalesForce would be helpful
Strong multi-tasking and project management capabilities
Bachelor’s degree required
CFA charterholder or CFA candidate preferred
1-3 years Investment industry experience preferred
